A
warning about firmware updates.
Things can go wrong during the update process, rendering the modem inoperable.
Exercise caution. Don't try to run other programs while updating the modem firmware,
and don't try to update the firmware the day before a major presentation. Only
use firmware updates intended for your specific modem and only if they are required.
Please read the documentation accompanying the update program. Failing to do
so may render the modem unusable.
Firmware updates are made available to Spirit customers on the understanding
that the update process must be done without interruption. If the update process
is stoped or interrupted, the modem may become unusable. If the update process
is interrupted, the modem will not respond and must be returned to our Service
Department of Service Agent for repair. This type of repair is not covered under
warranty.
After the firmware update
If you are using Microsoft Windows, after the update process Windows will see
your modem as a new modem. Simply follow these steps to ensure Windows recognises
and configures the modem correctly
- From the Start menu, choose Settings -> Control Panel. Once the Control
Panel is open, run the 'Add New Hardware' wizard.
- You will be asked if you want Windows to search for your new hardware. We
want to specify the new modem information, so select No and click Next.
- Next, you'll need to select the type of hardware to install. Clearly, you
want to select Modem. Click 'Next'.
- Windows will offer to try to detect a new modem. This often works, and is
worth a shot if you don't have a .inf file. Since you do have a .inf file,
you want to select " Don't detect my modem; I will select it from a list."
Then click 'Next'.
- Click the 'Have Disk' button.
- Click Browse and navigate to the folder where the .inf file is located.
If you're in the right directory, the .inf file should be listed on the left
side of the window. Click OK.
- Click OK in the Install from Disk window.
- Select your modem from the list and click OK.
- Select the COM port your modem is on and click OK.
- Click Finish when Windows is done setting up the modem.
How do I tell my programs to use the new modem settings?
General
First, check that the new modem settings work correctly. From the Start menu,
choose Settings -> Control Panel. Once the Control Panel is open, double click
Modems. Select your modem from the list. If all is OK, you should be able to view
the modem properties. Click OK to close.
Dial-Up Networking
Double click the My Computer icon on the desktop. Then open the Dial-Up Networking
folder. Select a connection icon and choose Properties from the File menu (or
right-click on the connection icon and choose Properties). Select your modem from
the Connect Using drop-down menu and then click OK to save changes. Repeat for
each connection icon.
